Abstract: Light rails and street cars have long been in operation in big cities around the world. Most of the early ones are line of sight driving with safety relying on the driver. However, things have been changing with higher demand on safety leading to new signal and control systems being employed. Some operators have requested for CBTC type of moving block signalling, anti-collision systems, driver vigilance systems ….etc. However, there are much restrictions on installation and operation in busy roads and streets. Rail/Road junction management and passenger information for light rail and street car systems have their own challenges of a different dimension. There are new concepts and development in this aspect. The speaker would like to share his experience on the old and existing signal, control and passenger information systems he came across in the US, Europe and China. He would also like to discuss the new trend for such development in newly built and retrofit light rail and street cars. Speaker: Mr. PANG Kwok Wai has over 40 years’ experience in the railway industry covering design, maintenance, management development and multi-discipline large scale projects. His last post in the Mass Transit Railway Corporation of Hong Kong was the Infrastructure Development & Engineering Asset Manager, who acts as the Asset Owner to coordinate with all infrastructure related Project Teams (including Civil, Power, Track, Signal, Control & Communications) on design, implementation, testing of all new Lines, Extensions and major asset replacements to assure that they comply with the operation, maintenance, safety and recovery requirements at the lowest Life Cycle Cost and minimal impact to existing services.
