IRSE News February 2022

February’s IRSE News is now available online.  

As well as the latest news from the Institution and Local Sections, this month features one of our ever popular ‘back to basics’ articles on points; an overview of the Engineering Council’s guidance on risk and technical papers to accompany the recent presidential lecture series with an overview of signalling in Thailand and the new Red Line.

The IRSE Professional Examination

For those planning to sit the professional exam in October, the date is confirmed as 1 October 2022, when you will be able to sit either the Certificate (Module A) (open to members and non-members) or one or more of the Advanced Diploma modules (Modules B to D) (only open to members who have passed one or more module already).  

If you know someone who would like to take Module(s) B to D and they are not a member already, please encourage them to complete the appropriate membership application form and email it to membership@irse.org by February 11.

For those planning to take the Certificate in Railway Control Fundamentals (Module A) on 26 March, you are reminded that the last day for bookings is 28 February.more info

The testing challenges of transferring Manchester ROC

2 February 2022, 18:00-20:00 (UTC); online

The Manchester south signalling system is unique in the UK, featuring the only example of an interlocking installed by Ansaldo in the 90s to try and increase competition in UK signalling. 

For this presentation, our speakers Phil Harper-Smith and Sean Dennien will go through how this particular site came to be installed, talking about the unique features and the challenges presented. 

This event will be held in-person at Atkins office in Swindon and online via GoToMeeting, subject to restrictions imposed nationally and by Atkins. Please register regardless of attendance method.

Northern Line Extension
