IET/IRSE course in railway signalling and control systems

The date for the IET/IRSE 4 day course in railway signalling and control systems has been announced – 20 to 24 March 2023 at Austin Court, Birmingham UK. 

Day 1 – Signalling and control systems in context
Day 2 – Fundamentals of signalling systems
Day 3 – Signalling systems design and build
Day 4 – Technical visits

5th “CBTC and beyond” conference

This event will provide opportunities to hear about implementing CBTC and other advanced train control systems on metro, light rail, intercity, freight and commuter systems as well as meeting those interested in and working on these systems. [more info / book]

Corporate Memory – **NEW DATE**

Join the Western section either in person (Swindon) or via GoToMeeting to hear Greg Morse from RSS talk about why corporate memory matters.

This session will use the Clapham accident of 1988 and how it came to happen to demonstrate how a causal chain can link up, and the models we can use to understand and learn better.

Western Section & IMechE Joint Meeting — Design challenges of retrofitting ETCS on locomotives

IRSE Western section are pleased to be able to host the IRSE and IMechE joint meeting on design challenges of retrofitting ETCS on locos.

Siemens project engineers will explain the challenges of retrofitting European Train Control System (ETCS) equipment to locomotives.

This is a hybrid meeting, held at Siemens in Chippenham and online. [register]

London & SE section presentation: The Elizabeth Line

24 November 2022, 18:00-20:00 (UTC); Online

What began as a plan for a cross-London rail route over 40-years ago and became the Crossrail project is now an operational railway, carrying over 1-million passengers every week since May 2022. The Elizabeth Line is a technically advanced, interoperable main line railway which by the time this paper is read will be providing through train services between Reading and Heathrow Airport in the west and Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.

David Burton will outline the history of the route and the project which has delivered the infrastructure. The journey from development of the original designs and concepts to delivery of integrated systems has been fraught with challenges and the reasons behind these will be outlined. [more info]
