New exam study resources available online

Reminder to all exam students that there are lots of resources on Vimeo, thanks to our Younger Members’ section and other generous volunteers.

A study day for those taking the Certificate in Railway Control Engineering Fundamentals (Module A) has been arranged for 3 September – sign up here.

Bookings have now closed for the exams in October 2022 but planning has started for the Certificate (Module A) to be run again in March 2023 and all modules (Certificate and Modules B-D) in October 2023 – keep an eye on your member communications for further details.view study resources

‘Back to Basics’ Seminar

All are welcome to join the IRSE Younger Members’ Section for their first ‘Back to Basics’ seminar.

The Younger Members’ Section are delighted to announce a series of seminars on the back of the IRSE News’ ‘Back to Basics’ articles, all to be presented by the authors themselves.

First in the series is ‘principles of railway safety engineering’ presented by David Nicholson FIRSE. David is the Professional Head of Engineering Management within Atkins. He is a systems engineer with experience across the whole development lifecycle. He has taken projects from initial concept through design, development and manufacture and onto implementation.

In this webinar, the TFL team will be presenting their in-house software tools which are used to analyise signalling and depot performance as a part of major line upgrades; and will demonstrate how these tools also support the training of service controllers for the railway of today.

Piccadilly Line Upgrade – engineering challenges and contributing Carbon NetZero 2030

Please join the Railway Civil Engineers’ Association for this multidisciplinary hybrid lecture.

The Piccadilly Line Upgrade (PLU) will provide new trains and associated infrastructure to modernise the Piccadilly Line. The PLU is a £2.8th programme split into two stages:

• Stage 1 – the introduction of a new rolling stock fleet and associated enabling works
• Stage 2 – a full upgrade of the Piccadilly Line signalling system to a modern digital network

The PLU will provide a new fleet of air-cooled modern trains for the Piccadilly Line with improved reliability, efficiency and accessibility, together with new and expanded maintenance and stabling facilities.

The programme is due to be completed by mid-2027 and will provide a 23% uplift in peak capacity with 27 trains per hour or a train every 2 minutes and 13 seconds
