January’s IRSE News is now available online.  

As well as the latest news from the Institution and Local Sections, this month features articles on the Minor Railways Section’s Biennial Technical Seminar, reusable signal code and a data driven digital approach to systems implementation.

In this special edition of the presidential lecture series, ‘the age of the intelligent railway’, experts from the Thailand signalling community share exclusive insights into the current and future plans for the Thai rail network.

From monorails to mix-mode signalling systems, these presentations show the variety and scale of rail projects in Thailand.

To cater to the global nature of the IRSE and make the most of new technology this content will be delivered using an innovative new method.

E-learning for Non Technical Skills (NTS)

In the December 2021 IRSE News Peter Williams wrote about Non-Technical Skills and how they can be introduced in Signal Engineering to mitigate risks and errors in our technical tasks.

A suite of seven eLearning modules is being produced by Network Rail, of which 4 are published internally and the remainder are expected to be published in January.

Network Rail has also agreed to make the modules available to the whole Signal Engineering community, and encourages engagement with them.

A further update on this will be provided in the February eBulletin with links to the eLearning via the IRSE website.

New Year, new objectives…

As we start 2022 many of us will be making new year resolutions, thinking about our career plans and setting ourselves objectives for the year.  

If you have been a member of the IRSE for a number of years you may not have thought about whether your membership grade best reflects the position you are now at in your career.  The Membership & Registration Team would like to this opportunity to encourage you all to reflect on this and consider applying to transfer to a different membership grade.  

There is information on the IRSE website to help you understand the requirements for each grade here and a useful flowchart explaining membership routes here.

Signalling systems around the world: Finland

Presented by Lauri Aarnio, a Team Leader at a Finnish company – Proxion, he will present the principles of conventional signalling in Finland.

Future Radio Mobile Communication System (FRMCS)​

Dan Mandoc, FIRSE, was Professional Head of Telecommunications for Network Rail for six years. He was UIC ERIG Chairman, dealing with the GSM-R Specifications, and closely associated with the development of the system to replace of GSM-R, known as the Future Radio Mobile Communication System (FRMCS), since its inception. He is now Head of FRMCS at the Union Internationale des Chemins de fer (UIC – International Union of Railways) and leading the project. Click for more details.more info
