 Exam News Candidates for modules 1 and 3-7 will receive their exam results by mid-January – if we can beat this deadline, then we will!Candidates for module 2 – Education & Professional Development committee and the office are still working on a solution for you to sit the final module 2 paper in 2021.Certificate in Railway Control Engineering Fundamentals (Module A) will next be run in October 2021, with booking opening in early 2021. If you missed Rod’s presentation, it can be viewed on the IRSE’s Vimeo channel here. read online  4th Presidential lecture In the fourth in the series of presidential lectures, testing and software-based critical systems on the railway will be explored by Nicholas Wrobel as part of Dr Daniel Woodland’s theme of challenges of change in complex CCS systems.Nicholas will consider factors such as: the requirements and typical operating envelope; a framework for system level testing; key elements of the test rig; a methodology to determine the test scenarios; metrics to measure the software’s fitness for purpose, achievable levels of confidence and the number of test runs required to achieve a given confidence level and to satisfy the engineering safety and assurance case.This will be livestreamed and recorded for viewing afterwards. He is managing director of Signet Solutions.Andy Knight started his railway career as a trainee technician with the then nationalised British Railways (BR). This saw him join several family members into the industry. He advanced through the grades within BR and studied on day release and gained experience of all the disciplines within the signalling department. He headed up a team in the maintenance and faulting section before becoming a supervisor in the fault control centre in Manchester. His next role saw him join the national training organisation within BR and develop the training department in the aftermath of the Clapham Junction incident which saw a large investment in training and development of signal and telecom engineers. He became part of the team that bought the unit as a business during the privatisation of the organisation, forming the College of Railway Technology in the mid 1990’s. Consequently, that business was sold, and Andy worked on the transition before joining an old colleague who had formed Signet Solutions in 2001.Then Signet was a small company providing support and consultancy to the fledgling Railtrack. Andy became MD and majority shareholder of the company in 2003 transforming Signet into one of the leading providers of training and development solutions for signalling engineers within the UK and around the globe.Signet has helped companies set up training academies and worked closely with suppliers to provide bespoke training on new and unique equipment internationally.Andy has always supported the IRSE joining early in his career becoming a Member in 2006 and Fellow in 2012. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Directors.The company sponsors the IRSE/Signet award which provides a bursary to the candidate achieving the highest mark in a single module and provides funds to allow the winner to attend an international IRSE event (Aspect/Convention). The accuracy and integrity of the infrastructure data from which this information is derived is therefore an important consideration for an ETCS trackside project. The talk will explore this topic, drawing on Alstom’s experience of implementing ETCS L2 on the Great Western Main Line between Paddington and Heathrow. register York Section – “Maintaining a post COVID railway”10th December 2020, Online. 17:00 – 19:00 (UTC)Once again, we’re offering a paper with a maintenance theme, delivered by a collection of signal engineers.The past 12 months have seen change unlike anything for many years, the logistics in terms of assuring a safe and reliable railway are more challenging than ever, many of our routine activities make social distancing impossible.In order to convince commuters to return to rail post COVID we must ensure trains run on time, every time, this highlights the need for our signalling assets to have greater diagnostic capability.This paper will explore how the latest remote condition monitoring is being applied to signalling assets to improve our understanding of asset health.We will demonstrate a new platform which transforms data into information which signal engineers can use to make better decisions.As usual we will be telling it as it is!
