Second Presidential Lecture
18 June; London, UK
Continuing Jane Power’s presidential theme of “Unsung Heroes,” Matt Shelley’s lecture is on the subject of safety distance calculations. This area has become a specialism in its own right, and is in danger of being separated from conventional signalling and signalling engineers. In the days of moving block systems this area is vastly important and is at the centre of how we ensure that the railway is safe.
Matt Shelley is a Chartered Engineer with the IET and an Affiliate Member of the IRSE. An independent consultant in the 4LM project team approving safety distance calculations, Matt has over 25 year’s experience implementing new signalling systems onto the London Underground network.
The lecture will be hosted by Alchemmy Consulting in Southwark followed by a networking drinks reception sponsored by Synergy Rail Limited.
FULL DETAILS WILL BE AVAILABLE ONLINE SHORTLY

Listening for Trouble – Protecting Rail Infrastructure Using Fibre Optic Sensing and AI
27 June 2024; London UK & Online at 18:00 (UTC+1)
Lindsay McInnes, the Director of Product Management at Sensonic will explain how the Sensonic system utilises the synergy between AI and fibre-optic sensing to detect ground vibrations from multiple sources, such as human trespass, cable thefts, or natural hazards like rockfalls and landslides. This technology enables them to monitor conditions without the reliance on extensive wayside sensors, advancing how we address immediate track threats and overall rail infrastructure safety.
This will be a hybrid meeting held at 5 Endeavour Square, Stratford, London and online. If you wish to attend in person, you must email londonse@irse.org before 21 June as places are limited.
