IRSE News April 2020
April's IRSE News is now available online.
It includes Wim Coenraad's presidential programme on "The race against obsolescence" and Bharti Jain's perspective on the impact of Artificial Intelligence on the world's fourth largest rail network.
The IRSE News team work far in advance to meet the production deadlines associated with compiling and printing a quality publication for international distribution. Due to the rapidly evolving nature of the Coronavirus pandemic, references to events in this edition (such as the Annual Dinner on p.30) have been superceded. Due to the large scale impact on meetings and events, the IRSE website www.irse.org should be the definitive source of up to date information for members.

Assisting infrastructure owners
As with the call for recently retired medical staff to offer assistance to the NHS, infrastructure owners in our sector have also asked for help. We encourage eligible members to contact their former employers if they would like to volunteer assistance at this difficult time.
AGM Update
IRSE Council have agreed to postpone the AGM, subject to the constraints of the current public health crisis.
The incoming president and Council members will assume office on the 23rd April 2020
Council elections

Our thanks for the record turnout* to vote in this year's elections for Council. We will announce the results on our website on the 23rd of April.
*Exceptionally high participation in this year's election saw a turnout of 30% of corporate members.
IRSE Annual Dinner
Postponed – April 2021
It has been decided by Council that this year's Annual Dinner be postponed until April 2021.
IRSE Members' Lunch
With regret, Council have taken the decision to cancel the Members' Lunch for 2020 as a result of the current public health emergency.
International Convention Toronto, Canada 2020
At the request of Council, the convention committee are reviewing this event over the coming weeks. We will keep you informed.
Website Update
Apologies to all who experienced difficulty accessing the IRSE website last week. The IRSE team along with our database and IT contractors worked hard to resolve a wider technical issue — remote working and reduced access to premises presented significant challenges.
Professional exam – October 2020
Sign ups should continue for the October IRSE professional exam. The Education & Professional Development Committee will keep the exam date under review as the current situation unfolds and will keep all candidates informed should changes be required.

Telecommunications Study Day – now online
4th April; Online, 09:45 to 17:00 BST
This event is aimed at increasing telecommunications knowledge for those in railway signalling or telecoms.
The day will consist of a number of talks and demonstrations spanning telecommunications principles, cybersecurity, ERTMS, right down to signal post telephones, all within a railway context. This event will also be useful for those planning to take IRSE exam modules 4, 6, or the new module A in 2020, or the new modules C or D in the future. A number of past paper questions will be discussed during the day, however the event will also be useful for those just looking to expand their knowledge.
Due to exceptional demand, this event is fully booked.
Younger members' exam preparation webinar for modules 2, 3 & 5
25th April; Online, 09:30 to 15:00 BST
Study event for those attempting modules 2, 3 or 5 of the IRSE exam or wanting to increase their general industry knowledge. This event is now planned to consist of a number of online sessions on 25 April (and possibly future dates). Places are limited, please book via Eventbrite below

Sharing experience and expertise among professionals in our sector is central to the IRSE.
IRSE Engage is an initiative to create online content with our members, for our members during this difficult time. At present we are reaching out to speakers from events which cannot take place to create engaging online content for our member network.
