Membership subscription renewal

Early in June you will receive your IRSE membership subscription renewal notice for 2017-18 (unless you pay by direct debit, or your subscription is paid by your employer, or by payroll deduction).   Please make your renewal payment without delay, if you have not already done so.

We also strongly recommend that at the same time you log in to the IRSE website and check that your personal information, including most importantly your contact details, are correct – and amend them where necessary.

IRSE EXAM 2017 – deadline for applications

If you are planning to take the IRSE Exam in October this year, your Application Form must reach the IRSE office in London by 30^th June.  Click here for more details.

Convention 2017: USA

You can now book online for the 2017 Convention, and we are offering Early Bird rates if you book by 30^th June.

The Convention is also open to non-members (at a higher rate). If you know of work colleagues who might be interested in attending, please show them the information about the event.  A flier is available for this purpose (it also appeared in the May edition of Railway Gazette International).

First Presidential Programme Paper 2017-18

14-15 July : Brisbane

The first technical paper in our Presidential Programme for 2017-18 will be delivered during the Australasian Section Technical Meeting taking place in Brisbane on 14-15 July 2017.

The paper will be presented by Cassandra Gash of the Australasian Section, on the subject of “An Engineer’s journey to becoming consciously competent” (addressing Peter Symon’s theme for the Presidential Year, “Future Signalling and You”).

ASPECT 2017

28-29 November, Singapore

On 28-29 November our 9^th ASPECT Conference will take place.  For the first time, the event will be held outside the UK, in the dazzling city state of Singapore, a world-leading centre of urban transport technology, and at the heart of one of the world's most dynamic regions, Asia. 

This event will feature around 40 high quality technical papers that address the broad themes of the Conference, together with a suppliers’ exhibition and optional additional days for Younger Members (27 Nov), technical visits (30 Nov) and an Australasian and Singapore Sections Seminar (1 Dec).  The event is being supported by the Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES).

IRSE Knowledge Base

A reminder, should you have forgotten, that all recent technical articles published in IRSE NEWS are accessible via the IRSE’s Knowledge Base.  Each article has a synopsis of the contents, and a link to the edition of IRSE NEWS in which it appeared.  For articles less than 12 months old, you will be asked to log-in on the IRSE website to view the full article.  We are working to make more of the articles, in particular those produced by the IRSE’s International Technical Committee, available without the need to log in, recognising that these are of interest to the wider rail industry.

The Knowledge Base is fully searchable, and articles are grouped into categories to enable papers on a common theme to be found.

Technical visit to new Paris-Gare de Lyon interlocking

The next event of the IRSE-France Section will be the Technical Visit to the brand new Interlocking at Paris-Gare de Lyon, taking place on 20 June 2017. Since the number of visitors will be limited, it is advisable to register quickly. IRSE members will have preference.

Younger Members’ LUL Highgate Service Control Centre Technical Visit

The IRSE Younger Members are pleased to invite you to this very rare opportunity to a Technical visit to one of the most important Service Control Centre’s of London Underground. This visit provides a chance to see and learn how the Control Centre operates and handle a quarter of all passenger journeys on the entire London Underground network each day.

Younger Members’ Exam preparation weekend

1-2 July, Derby, UK

Once again, with the support of Signet Solutions Ltd, the IRSE Younger Members are running a weekend event at the beginning of July to help young engineers with their professional development.  The event offers the choice of becoming more familiar with traditional UK mainline signalling equipment hardware through practical demonstrations, or attending classroom sessions more focussed on attempts at specific IRSE Exam questions in modules 2, 3 and 5.

Younger Members’ Exam Workshop for Modules 1 and 7

15 July, Birmingham, UK

With the kind support of Atkins, the IRSE Younger Members are pleased to invite you to an IRSE Exam Preparation Workshop for Modules 1 & 7. This event is offered free of charge. As well as attempting exam questions we will bring to you a signalling system based workshop with exciting interactive talks and games, purely aimed at motivating the participants to think outside the (signal) “box”. The workshop will emphasise on the importance of engineering safety and the role it plays in the way the signalling system is developed.

Rail Live 2017

Rail Live UK is taking place on 21-22 June 2017 at the Quiton Rail Technology Centre, Station Road, Long Marston, Stratford on Avon (UK).  It features everything from traction & rolling stock, rail plant and infrastructure, electrification and signalling demonstrations, to displays of engineering, rail maintenance materials and product development/testing safety, digital products and innovation.
