ASPECT 2015 – International Technical Conference
The IRSE ASPECT 2015 Conference takes place in London, UK on 15-17 September.
This is your last opportunity to book. As well as papers from authors around the world, there is an

The September IRSE NEWS has been published and can be accessed on line – click here to

Participation in the IRSE Mentoring Scheme
The IRSE Mentoring Scheme was launched worldwide earlier this year, and in addition to
requests to be mentored, a number of people have offered to be mentors. Matt Slade (an
IRSE Younger Member) has taken on the role of Scheme Administrator. If you are willing
to be a mentor, or you are interested in having someone to mentor you (for career guidance
or help with professional development, for instance), you can contact Matt via
mentoring@irse.org. Click here for more information about the Scheme, and to download

Beijing Convention 2016
Next year's annual Convention will take place in Beijing on 10 – 14 October 2016. A full
programme of technical papers and visits is being prepared for members, together with a
partners programme. It is likely that Monday 10 October will include a visit to one of
the many historic sites in the Beijing area, for both members and guests, before the
official opening reception in the evening.

The following news items will be of interest principally to members in Europe (including
the UK):
Technical Visit (Irish Section) : 18/19 September (Belfast)
The IRSE’s Irish Section is organising its first ever Technical Visit on Friday 18th and
Saturday 19th September in Belfast. As well as social elements, the technical part
includes tours of Belfast’s Central Signal Centre and Translink’s Signalling and Fleet
Mintenance facilities. This is a worthwhile opportunity to experience the highlights of
Belfast and Northern Ireland in both the technical and social senses.

Danish Resignalling with ETCS: Technical Paper to be presented by Morten Sondergaard
(Banedanmark) : 6 October (London, UK)
The first Technical Paper of our President’s Programme takes place at 1 Birdcage Walk,
London, on 6 October. Denmark is pressing ahead with a major programme to replace all
their conventional lineside signalling with ETCS, and in this paper the author will
describe the programme and the challenges that it presents. The meeting starts at 18.00,
with refreshments from 17.30.

ERTMS: Integration of Control, Command, Signalling and Rolling Stock Systems : 13 October
(London, UK)
The IRSE is supporting the Institution of Mechanical Engineer’s one day seminar on ERTMS,
taking place in London on 13 October. This seminar will explore what is being done in the
UK to manage the introduction of ERTMS, providing insight not only into the technical
challenges but also the impact on rolling stock, the effects on business programmes and
operations, and on the competence requirements for the design, implementation, operation
and maintenance of ERTMS.

EULYNX Technical Visit – Braunschweig, Germany : 6/7 November
An IRSE Technical Visit to Braunschweig, Germany will take place on 6 and 7 November.
The focus of the visit is the EULYNX project (click here for more information about EULYNX).
On Friday 6th November there will be presentations in the afternoon from infrastructure
managers and suppliers on EULYNX, and on Saturday 7th there will be technical visits.

Minor Railways Section – Biennial Technical Seminar : 7 November
The fifth technical seminar of the IRSE Minor Railways Section will be held at the
Kidderminster Railway Museum in Worcestershire (UK) on 7 September. This meeting will be
a continuation of the successful events held bi-annually since 2009, the theme this year
is “Projects”, concentrating on the management and implementation of projects on Minor
Railways. Papers this year include submissions from mainland Europe. Also at the Seminar
this year will be the presentation of this year’s award of the Section’s “Minor Railway
Volunteer S & T Technician of the Year”.
The meeting will be free to attend, but is limited to 100 persons, so advance booking is
