Introduction of Automatic Train Operation in East Rail Line
Background
In year 2000 it was decided to introduce Automatic Train Operation (ATO) system in East Rail Line (ERL) in order to
improve the train frequency from 24 to 27 trains per hour. Both Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system and the
Rolling Stocks in ERL were not originally designed for automatic driving. There were a lot of technical challenges
during the design, installation and commissioning phases. After two years intensive project programme, 37 trainsets
were equipped with ATO and the first ATO train was put into passenger service in December 2003.
The purpose of this technical talk is to share the experience gained in this project and some ATO technical knowledge.
